A WORD ABOUT CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY
BY PEARL HUANG, DIRECTOR OF RU YI STUDIO

CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY AS MEDITATION

A Beginner's Approach to Chinese Calligraphy

Chinese calligraphy is one of the oldest and most unique form of communication. The written Chinese language is a symbolic expression through pictures, known as pictographs, which later evolved into ideograms rich in meaning and philosophy. Through the thousands of years of Chinese cultural history many changes have taken place; however, the original forms and spiritual meanings of these powerful images have sustained throughout the ages.

Learning to write these symbols is not only an aesthetic expression, it is also a way of life. Chinese calligraphy can express beauty, emotion, and the life force. Practicing Chinese calligraphy is a meditation in the practice of Qi, and to harmonize with nature and the Tao.
